David completed his PhD in Duke University’s Program in Literature in 2018. His dissertation, “Technics Before Time,” argues for an original interpretation of the essence of technology, one which explains technological process anterior to the distinction between human experience and prosthetic extensions. It synthesizes the philosophies of Eugen Fink, Gilbert Simondon, Alfred North Whitehead, and Bernard Stiegler through a series of analyses of such popular technologies as Dungeons & Dragons, astrophotography, periodontal surgery and orthodontic braces, videogame gore, and electric guitar effects pedals.
